So you know someone who is learning to drive. They may be your son or daughter or a friend and you're going to supervise them whilst they practice driving in between lessons.
If you're going to supervise a learner you must:
- be over 21
- be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in, eg they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car
- have had their full driving licence for 3 years (from countries in the European Union or European Economic Area)

When supervising a learner driver there are some important points you need to be aware of:
- It is illegal for you to use a mobile device whilst supervising a learner, in the same way it is when you're driving. Read about the law here.
- You must not take a learner driver on a motorway. The law changed to allow learner drivers on the motorway only with an Approved Driving Instructor in a car fitted with dual controls.
